7.30 Report

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

If you were to ask, I’d tell you that one of my greatest fears is being on TV in the background of one of those tabloid news stories. You know the ones where all you see is a slow-motion close-up of a cellulitey bum walking away. Or worse, a zoomed in slow-mo shot of someone eating a hamburger, beetroot and sauce oozing out the side.

So I broke into a little sweat when a friend left a message on our answering machine the other night saying he’d seen me on TV. It was a news program, but a reputable one, and I was in the background, but thankfully not doing anything embarrassing.

The story, on the 7.30 Report, was about the success of Frankie Magazine, with lots of footage of the Finders Keepers Market. So my 3 seconds of fame was proudly riding on the coat-tails of Frankie Mag. And what a fine coat it is!

You can watch it here for the next few days on the 7:30 Report, from Tuesday 8th June (fast forward to just before the 25th minute).

Extempore Show

Monday, June 7th, 2010

I have works in a show, Extempore, at Open Studio; a graffiti based gallery. Each artist was encouraged to paint the walls before hanging the show over the top. So I got to try out some spray paint!

The Extempore show will be on display for the next two weeks at:

Open Studio
2/25 Vernon St,
Coffs Harbour

Finders Keepers Interview

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Thank-you to Finders Keepers (again) for featuring me on their website. Read the full interview here.

The Wedding Show

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

This weekend we attended to the wedding of some friends. The groom is a cartoonist and the wedding was held in a gallery. Instead of wedding gifts they asked each guest to create a cartoon or illustration to hang in the gallery for their wedding.

The gallery, in turn, is holding an exhibition of them all, not just for one night, but for the next few weeks. There were over 60 works, and they were amazing!

The Wedding Show
May 27- June 17
The Bunker Gallery
Coffs Harbour, NSW.

Article at Side Street Sydney

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

During the hustle and bustle of the Finders Keepers Market, Alex English from Side Street Sydney sat and interviewed me.

The article is really well written and rather complimentary I must say. Thank-you Alex!
(Mind you, although I WISH I had a photographic memory, sadly this is not the case.)

If you’d like to read it, it’s over here at Side Street Sydney.

The Market

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

A huge thank-you to everyone who came along to the market on the weekend. I don’t normally get to see people see my work, so that, and being able to say hello and have a chat with everyone, was just the most happy-making thing. I had a really really great time!

I am currently working to restock my online shop, and updating my wholesale catalogue. Please feel free to send me an email if there’s anything particular you would like.

Finders Keepers

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

The Finders Keepers Market is an amazing event which brings together emerging and contemporary independent artists and designers of original and high creative standards across 80 stalls. And I am thrilled that I’m going to be part of it!

I will be sharing one big art-tastic stall with fellow artists Emma of Benconservato and Penny of Pocket Carnival. Come say “hi” if you can make it. We will be next to the Frankie stall, opposite the bar.

The Finders Keepers:
Friday 7th May from 6pm – 10pm
Saturday 8th May from 10am – 6pm
CarriageWorks – 245 Wilson Street, Eveleigh*, Sydney, NSW, Australia
(*that’s Newtown / Macdonald Town)

mural in the making

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

I recently finished painting a mural for a new European style artisan bakery in town. The brief was to paint bread in a non-cliched way, to include a local element without making it touristy, and to encourage customers to look down into the shop to see all the yummy things being handmade fresh in the store.

We decided to focus on one of the islands just off-shore; the one with the old lighthouse. I wove in the history of how the supplies used to be delivered to the island via boat, then hoisted in up the cliff in baskets. My concept employed a little “artistic/poetic license” with a loopy rope leading from the preparation bench in the kitchen, across the mural, all the way to the lighthouse, with baskets of bread seeming as though they’ve been freshly packed by the bakers, and sent sliding on their way along the rope.

The bakery owners also like my whales with hands, so we popped some of them in there too. It seemed only right since so many of them visit this area each year.

The final result being that your eye tends to land on the whales, swirl around the water, and follow the rope all the way into the kitchen!

Visit the bakery at:

(P.S. The movie above is a stop motion capture, created by animating a series of still photos, taken once every five minutes during the painting process. If you enjoy it, please do share it around!)
